This past winter Washington Rush coach George Abisinu Kawa traveled 24 plus hours by air to reach the southern tip of Africa. His final destination: the landlocked country of Eswatini, or Swaziland.
George is originally from Ghana but his soccer playing career brought him to Eswatini, a small but geographically diverse country that lies at the base of the Drakensburg mountains in northeastern South Africa.
Along with visiting family and friends, George was there to see his foundation, George Quality Soccer Academy. One of the academy's goals is to provide young players with equipment they can use to follow their passion for the game of soccer.
"The experience of a typical young player in Africa has so many sides and is deeply influenced by cultural, social, and economic factors,” he said. "Football holds a significant place in the hearts of many young Africans, often seen as a pathway to success and an opportunity for social mobility. However, the journey for young players in Africa can be challenging.”
That’s where George’s foundation comes in. Prior to his trip he spent time gathering gently used gear from Washington Rush teams to be passed on to young players in Eswatini and Ghana.
"During my trip . . . one particular experience stood out where I had the chance to interact with young players and coaches in my soccer academy and engaged in donating some Rush gear to Waterford Kamhlaba UWCSA Sports Department. Such experiences enrich the overall trip and provide me with valuable life lessons beyond just soccer.”
Soccer gear is just one aspect of the academy in Eswatini, it's also a place for young kids to play and grow in the game. George is passionate about players challenging themselves on the field as much as possible.
"I believe that in order for young players to improve their game, they have to be willing to play lots of games, take risks and make mistakes,” George said.
Growing up in Ghana George played wherever he and his friends could find space in the streets and fields. His hard work eventually paid off when he was selected to play for the Ghanaian youth national team. After finishing college George moved to Eswatini to continue his playing career until injuries caught up with him.
Now George is following his passion for soccer on two continents as a coach for Washington Rush and through his academy work in Ghana and Eswatini.
